KAARI News

The Korean American Association of Rhode Island (KAARI) was the recipient of the Rhode Island Expansion Arts Program (RIEAP) 2019-2021. RI-EAP is a partnership between Rhode Island Foundation, Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA), and Rhode Island Council for the Humanities (RICH). It offers funding and organizational assistance to community-based arts and cultural organizations to broaden their impact on the state of Rhode Island.

The RIEAP achieves this by introducing collaborative partnerships: joining two culturally diverse Rhode Island organizations and asking them to bring more cultural awareness and exposure by working on a large project together. The partnered organization is Teatro Education Center for the Arts and Sciences (Teatro ECAS), a Latin-X based theater group. The project in motion was a Korean Latin-X play called "Storybook of Love - Our Fusion of Two Cultures" created and performed by both organizations.

With the onset of COVID, however, we decided to switch to video production. However, producing a play on video was quite the undertaking. So the organizations pivoted and decided to have two live online sessions: one on culture and one on their organization's activities.

In the first event on January 21st, guest speakers included Suzanne Sharkey from KAARI and Gonzalo Cuervo from Teatro ECAS. This session covered the culture of both organizations.

The second session on January 28th featured Bongsup Cho from KAARI and Francis Perra from Teatro ECAS. This session covered the activities of both organizations.

For those unable to join us for the live sessions, please enjoy the recordings below.

Please feel free to forward the recordings to anyone you wish. Please make sure you're checking the email announcements so that you don't miss any of KAARI's activities.
