Dear KAARI members and friends,

Happy New Year to you all!

I am Angela Sharkey, honored to serve as the newly elected president of the Korean American Association of Rhode Island (KAARI). Before we embark on a new chapter together, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to former President Sang-wook Ji, Secretary-General Sun Kang, and all the dedicated members who have led KAARI through numerous events and activities over the past two years.

My journey in the United States began in 1980, and since then, I have woven my story of family, business, and community engagement. In 2003, I moved my family to Rhode Island and became involved in various KAARI activities.

While contributing as much as possible, I recognized the need for change and adaptation to meet the evolving times. As your president, I seek your collaboration in finding innovative ways for our association to grow and thrive.

Since 1975, we have taken pride in developing KAARI, and in 2017, the Korean Community Center became a symbol of our community's home in Cranston. This space serves as a hub for board meetings, events, cultural classes, and more, showcasing the rich tapestry of our community's culture and history.

Our recent achievements, including the "Sounds of Korea" music event in 2022 and the inaugural "Korean Festival" in 2023, have been made possible through hard work and support, earning recognition from the State of Rhode Island Senate. As Korean Americans, we should take pride in these accomplishments.

Reflecting on the long history of Korean immigration to the United States, which began in 1903, and its roots in Rhode Island since 1947, KAARI has become a respected and trusted organization in the smallest state in the country.

We welcome your participation and opinions. Your continued interest and support will be instrumental in shaping our future. Together, we commit to working diligently for a bright and prosperous future for all of us.

In the year of the dragon, 2024, we eagerly anticipate seeing you in good health at our events throughout the new year.

Warm regards,

Angela Sharkey
KAARI President
