KAARI celebrated the
72nd anniversary of the August 15 Korea Liberation Day/Korea Day with Korean
Community members at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) in Warwick on
Saturday, August 12, 2017. This event was a commemoration of Korea Day,
proclaimed by the State in 1979, 2016, and 201. The event proceeded with Angela
Sharkey's National and Korean Anthem, followed by Boston Consul General Sungjoon
Eom's remark and KAARI President Bongsup Cho's welcome messages. Geunchan Park,
Chairman of the KAARI board, recited the proclaiming statement (see the photo
below) designating Korea Liberation Day as Korea Day. Subsequently, Chairman of
Building Committee, Dongsoo Lee, explained the plans of the newly purchased
Korean Culture Center. The ceremony ended with the Korea Liberation Day song.
Lastly, Wonjung Lee led to shouting three times of "Korea independent and
forever." After the ceremony,
guest artists, including our KAARI member Junghee Oh, performed. A three-person
military dance group from New York conducted the traditional Korean sword dance
Taepyeongmu. The large Korean Flag behind the auditorium stage surely reminded
of the meaning of Korean Day. Our 2nd generation members Suzanne Sharkey and
Sooyeun Hwang served as a stage helper during the event. After the performance,
KAARI served a hearty Korean meal to guests. Several of CCRI's International
Club student members have been very helpful in serving food as well.
