KAARI had an event for an 8.15 Liberation Day/Korea Day at CCRI
in Warwick on Saturday, August 13, 2016. This event was significant because it
was a restoration of the 1979 Korea Day Proclamation. There was a welcoming
speech by Korean President Bongsup Cho and the encouragement message by Boston
Consul General Sungjoon Eom. Then, Governor Raimondo's ‘Korea Day’ proclamation
was read by William Park, Chair of the KAARI Board. The 6th KAARI President Ilseok Ko, who played a significant role
in proclaiming Korea Day in 1979, explained the background history of the
Korean American Association at the time. The 4th president, Wonjung Lee,
reminded that 5th President Seungman Cha designed the KAARI logo. The second part of the event featured Korean traditional music
performances with Gayageum, Geomungo, and Korean classical dance. The large
Korean flag behind the stage reminded of the meaning of 'Korea Day.'
After the event, all the guests were invited to a Korean buffet
dinner in the CCRI cafetoria. Several students from CCRI's International Club
members have helped serve food.
